Lawrence’s short story, Rocking Horse Winner explores the relationship between Paul, a young man with autism, and his emotionally distant mother. Paul becomes dangerously obsessed with solving the “bad luck” of his family in order to win his mother’s love. His pursuit awakens a strange magic that connects him to luck, but also to powerful voices only he can hear. In our new age of entitlement Rocking Horse Winner is an intimate, psychological look at love, “luck”, and greed.

In February, love is in the air with Donizetti’s charming comedy, The Elixir of Love, sung in a witty English translation. This heartwarming comedy hits the stage just in time for Valentine’s Day when a worker falls in love with a beautiful farm owner. HOT’s production is perfectly set in present-day Hawai‘i in a quaint town outside a sugar cane farm. The fantastic ensemble cast includes soprano Natalie Image, tenor Taka Komogata, and baritone Efrain Solis with director Maria Todaro. Benjamin Makino returns to conduct following the recent, triumphant run of Madame Butterfly.

Directed by HOT’s very own Karen Tiller, the cast is headed up by soprano Laura Corina Sanders in her HOT debut and rising local talent, tenor Taka Komagata. The production will be conducted by Elizabeth Askren, who is making a name for herself throughout the US and Europe.
