Rocking Horse Winner with Opera Maine
Taka will sing the role of The House in Rocking Horse Winner by Gareth William with Opera Maine.
Saturday, June 5 & 7 | 7 pm
Westbrook Performing Arts Center, 471 Stroudwater Street, Westbrook, ME
The 2023 Studio Artist Program will present two performances of Rocking Horse Winner by Gareth Williams with libretto by Anna Chatterton. A modern adaptation of D.H. Lawrence’s short story, Rocking Horse Winner explores the relationship between Paul, a young man with autism, and his emotionally distant mother. Paul becomes dangerously obsessed with solving the “bad luck” of his family in order to win his mother’s love. His pursuit awakens a strange magic that connects him to luck, but also to powerful voices only he can hear. In our new age of entitlement Rocking Horse Winner is an intimate, psychological look at love, “luck”, and greed.

Love is in the air.
In February, love is in the air with Donizetti’s charming comedy, The Elixir of Love, sung in a witty English translation. This heartwarming comedy hits the stage just in time for Valentine’s Day when a worker falls in love with a beautiful farm owner. HOT’s production is perfectly set in present-day Hawai‘i in a quaint town outside a sugar cane farm. The fantastic ensemble cast includes soprano Natalie Image, tenor Taka Komogata, and baritone Efrain Solis with director Maria Todaro. Benjamin Makino returns to conduct following the recent, triumphant run of Madame Butterfly.

The season opens in October with a gorgeous operatic telling of one of literature’s most beloved children’s stories, The Secret Garden, by composer Nolan Gasser and librettist Carey Harrison. Directed by HOT’s very own Karen Tiller, the cast is headed up by soprano Laura Corina Sanders in her HOT debut and rising local talent, tenor Taka Komagata. The production will be conducted by Elizabeth Askren, who is making a name for herself throughout the US and Europe. This production, perfect for the whole family, is the same traditional story you love but set in a tropical Hawaiian oasis.
